Moleskin isn’t actually made of moles’ skins (thanks goodness) but is a densely woven cotton with a soft brushed finish similar to a mole.

It was first used by farmers and hunters in medieval Europe, and later by workers in industries such as steelworks. The moleskin was dyed in different colours according to the industry in which it was used. At BlueBarn.Life we use moleskin because it is a traditional fabric perfect for our styles based on the waistcoats and jackets of the past.

It is warm, wind-resistant and hard-wearing, so it’s extremely practical. And it looks good. Several of our moleskin garments have been made by upcycling old fabric, but we also buy from Brisbane Moss, the original British manufacturer of corduroy and moleskin since 1858.
